Soccer by Ives correspondent Franco Panizo is reporting that MLS has offered our man Stuart a big contract to keep him from moving to Europe, reportedly "ten times his current salary."

Check out the story here: http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2009/12/holden-offered-b... (from whence comes that photo above), or read it here:

After enjoying a dream year for club and country, Houston Dynamo midfielder Stuart Holden is largely considered to be the next player in the U.S. pipeline to make the jump from MLS to Europe during the upcoming winter transfer window. But that potential move seems to be in jeopardy after MLS made an unexpected move.

According to reports out of Europe, Holden has been offered ten times his current salary by MLS, and could snub a move abroad to stay in the U.S. This report claims MLS commisioner Don Garber held talks with Holden last week in an effort to keep him from going to Europe.

"I was pretty flattered," Holden told the Evening Times. "It shows the commitment the MLS has in keeping me in the league. I know this decision is going to impact my career."

Holden has not ruled out a move abroad, stating he is considering overseas offers. Scottish Premier League clubs Rangers and Aberdeen have been linked with the U.S. national team midfielder.

Holden enjoyed a career season with the Houston Dynamo in 2009, scoring six goals and assisting on three others in 26 league games. Holden also made his national team debut this year, playing in 12 games.

What do you think of Holden possibly staying in MLS? Surprised by MLS's offer? Think Holden will decide to play abroad anyway?

Personally, I could not be happier with this news. I still think Holden will stay for at least one more year. In any event, I'm not sure a move to the SPL, especially to financially-uncertain Rangers, would be a good move. As an ardent Celtic supporter, I'm biased against the Strangers to begin with. However, assuming he makes the game day roster at Ibrox or in Aberdeen, I just don't think his game shows off its best qualities there. France would be a far better location.

That is, assuming he plays. I think that regular first team, starring duty on one of the elite teams in MLS positions him far better to make the South Africa roster than taking a gamble on landing first team, starring roles anywhere in Europe. Take this deal. Take the money. Stay in the States. Play in South Africa for the US. And then next year or the year after at this time, take the flyer and go.

I know that 10x his current deal still only puts him in the 300-400K range, which is less than what he could make in Europe right now. But money is money and playing and progressing while seeing regular first team action is playing and progressing while seeing regular first team action. If this wasn't a World Cup year, then maybe now would be more attractive. But as it is, and with his position on the US squad not 100 percent assured, then play it safe and take a very good deal.

What do you think?

I hope he stays!!!!

I think there might have been more to the offer of 10x salary dont you think? Maybe like being a face of the league or getting Beckham like (but maybe not Beckham like money) endorsment deals. Money can be had in more ways than annual salary.

I agree he'd better stay where he can play to make the WC team. Endorsement deals and marketing deals with MLS sounds good. That should improve the chances of staying. I think the national team in a WC year is a good enough reason. As he said before, the money will come.

I just read that English Premier League team Blackburn is now interested in Holden. Whereas the other two Scottish teams were facing financial problems, Blackburn isn't. Only problem is, he probably won't get a lot of playing time and that means he wouldn't be eligible for World Cup 2010. Hopefully, he stays with the Dynamo 'til the season's over.

i think stu will stay for one more year. he knows that by him staying he inceases his chances of being on the WC squad and not only that he will get better with lots of quality playing time. but after the season, he's gone! the attraction of europe is too great to resist especially for such a young player. but in regards to that he should sign at least a two year contract so that the league and the dynamo can make some money off of his transfer. by then his value will have increased. whatever happens though i'll still support him wherever he goes. i hope everything turns out well

Believe you have something there - take the deal and stay in the US, play in South Africa and then re-focus afterwards. Stuart is a valuable player for the MLS and MLS fans; especially to Forever Orange. Happy Holidays everyone..........

Sorry to have found this. Hope they're just spouting off and no credibility to it. The full story indicates Stewart will notify the Dynamo of his decision to move this week. They don't have a contract yet, so I don't see why Stewart would be agreeable to announce his move w/o one. Mark

Stuart Holden sweepstakes heats up
The Daily Mirror (UK)
English Premier League club Burnley is the latest team to enter the Stuart Holden sweepstakes. Burnley manager Owen Coyle wants to sign the U.S. international, who has also attracted the interest of Rangers and Aberdeen in his native Scotland and Burnley rival Blackburn and has an offer to remain in MLS with the Houston Dynamo.

Coyle has received good reports on the free agent whose hard-running style could help the Clarets. His status as a free agent and his British passport make him an attractive player.

Another player mentioned as a possible Burnley target is Holden's U.S. and Dynamo teammate, Ricardo Clark. - Read the whole story...

Will we see another American sit on the bench in Europe? Please, Stuart, consider that. I hope that Nike will switch some of their Tiger $$ to you. Stay for one more year, and you will prove yourself in every way.

Yeah I hope Holden stays in Houston. The Dynamo needs him to play to win the MLS Championships again this year.

DYNAMO/MLS...Offer MORE MONEY!!!!! Negotiating from a multiple of his current salary is idiotic at this point. 10 times his current salary is peanuts. His market value is much more and EPL teams are looking at a decent player at a bargain price. Do you not see that? There is no transfer fee and your BIG OFFER is near the bottom of the barrell there. Pony up or lose him.

How much are the Dynamo paying for Landin? How much will they free up with Clark gone? Cameron for Clark, Robinson for Cameron and we have a top team again with Holden in front of Cameron. No need to shop south of the border for any more players. Pony it up!!!!!

I think its to much money for a player that is not as good as DeRo, sorry I was not impressed by last season's performance. He has tallent ,but I felt that players like Davis,Cameron,Chabala,Mullan do more for Houston on the field than Holden and how about making everybody happy and give all the Dynamo players a raise because it takes 11 players to make a team and it never revolves around one person.

I remember hearing about DeRo being paid a lot less than other new Dynamo playes, and that made no sense because he was the main cause of Chings success. And probobly one of the main causes for winning the first 2 cup wins.

Last season I felt we had a weak mid-field and if he leaves im totally cool with it because then we can buy more experience players that would actually help to win another MLS cup.Not saying Holden did not help, but I don't think he did enough.

Now if he stays with Houston he will have more playing time and thats perfect,if he leaves then its not 100% sure he will play every game, and if it does not go well in Burnely when he comes back this 200k-400k deal will not be here waiting for him.I do like Holden a lot, but I still don't think he should recive this much money its too early for him.
SO.
Good luck to Holden.

Holden is set to be in trials with two other teams so it's highly unlikely that he will return to Houston other than to visit his family.

We'll see how the trails go over there. Remember, Bobby Boswell went through trials in Europe last year at this time and wound up back here as well. It's quite possible both Holden and Rico will be back, though unlikely, I admit.
